In contrast to workers shopping around for jobs with better conditions during the initial years of the Covid-19 pandemic, pundits now say employees want job security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span><em>It&#8217;s a trend being called \u2018The Big Stay\u2019.<\/em><\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Recent data shows more people may be holding tightly to their jobs, which could be in response to higher satisfaction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or conversely, greater uncertainty about the state of the economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But given that post-pandemic labour markets are starting to slacken, how far are things turning in the opposite direction, and what does it mean for Australians\u2019 career prospects this year?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/average-australian-salary\/\">What Is The Average Salary In Australia?<\/a>)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Is The Great Resignation Over? Did It Even Happen?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The so-called Big Quit or Great Resignation was a US-led phenomenon, as evidenced by data from the US Labor Department, which found:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>Resignations<\/strong> in the United States reached an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/archives\/jolts_01042022.htm\">all-time high in November 2021<\/a> \u2014 with 4.5 million people leaving their jobs that month (compared to 3.3 million in November 2020).<\/li><li><strong>50 million<\/strong> people voluntarily left their jobs throughout 2022 &#8211; the highest annual level since the Department started tracking this metric.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Unprecedented rates of quitting were driven by many factors, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2022\/03\/09\/majority-of-workers-who-quit-a-job-in-2021-cite-low-pay-no-opportunities-for-advancement-feeling-disrespected\/\">workers\u2019 desire for higher pay<\/a>, more opportunities for advancement, a better culture and more flexibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"791\" src=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/the-great-resignation-1024x791.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-102794\" srcset=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/the-great-resignation-1024x791.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/the-great-resignation-300x232.jpg 300w, https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/the-great-resignation-768x593.jpg 768w, https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/the-great-resignation.jpg 1500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Above: The Great Resignation was a continuation of a long-term trend that started in 2009.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In their article for the <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2022\/03\/the-great-resignation-didnt-start-with-the-pandemic\">Harvard Business Review<\/a>, Joseph Fuller&nbsp;and&nbsp;William Kerr argue that the impact of COVID in 2020 exacerbated an existing trend towards people \u2018reshuffling\u2019 their careers and resulted in more people changing jobs to avoid a return to the office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-create-block-tip-block tip-wrapper\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\"col-md-12\"><div class=\"card-wrapper\"><div class=\"card-title\"><div class=\"icon\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" viewBox=\"0 0 20 20\" fill=\"none\"><path fill-rule=\"evenodd\" clip-rule=\"evenodd\" d=\"M7.5 14.33a5 5 0 1 1 5 0v4.17h-5v-4.17Zm4.25-1.3-.75.44V17H9v-3.53l-.75-.44a3.5 3.5 0 1 1 3.5 0Z\" fill=\"#656E83\"><\/path><path d=\"M9.25 1v2h1.5V1h-1.5ZM5.53 4.47l-1.5-1.5-1.06 1.06 1.5 1.5 1.06-1.06ZM15.53 5.53l1.5-1.5-1.06-1.06-1.5 1.5 1.06 1.06ZM1 10.75h2v-1.5H1v1.5ZM17 10.75h2v-1.5h-2v1.5Z\" fill=\"#656E83\"><\/path><\/svg><\/div><h3 placeholder=\"Tip Title Goes Here\">Important!<\/h3><\/div><div class=\"card-content\"><p placeholder=\"Tip Content Goes Here\">At the height of this reshuffle, the US experienced a record-high national \u2018quit rate\u2019 of 3%.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Indications of an exodus were less noticeable in Australia, and didn\u2019t emerge until 2022. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A 2021 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pwc.com.au\/media\/2021\/pwc-report-what-workers-want.html\">survey of more than 1,800 Australians<\/a> found that 38% were considering leaving their jobs within 12 months. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span>However, intention is not the same as action.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abs.gov.au\/statistics\/labour\/jobs\/job-mobility\/latest-release\">Job mobility<\/a> figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) show that 9.5% of employed Aussies changed jobs in the 12 months to February 2022. That was the highest percentage in a decade and an increase from 7.5% in 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, it doesn\u2019t seem as significant when you consider:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>The average job mobility<\/strong> rate in the 10 years between 2012-2022 was 8.5%.<\/li><li><strong>The average rate<\/strong> at which Australians changed jobs in the decade prior to that was 10.8%.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/best-website-hosting-providers-in-australia\/\">11 Best Website Hosting Providers In Australia<\/a>).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Can Employers Expect A Decline In Departures?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>People have been speculating about The Great Resignation being over since 2023, but some commentators say we\u2019re now witnessing workers becoming overly cautious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/jolts.nr0.htm\">latest turnover figures<\/a> from the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey (JOLTS) show that so far in 2024, the rate at which Americans are quitting their jobs is lower \u2014 at just over 2%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/about-me-in-resume\/\">What To Write In The &#8220;About Me&#8221; Section Of Resume<\/a>).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/economy\/jobs\/fewer-workers-are-quitting-heres-what-that-means-for-the-economy-82e6c55b?st=sr1xp0mruvjq383&amp;reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink\">The Wall Street Journal<\/a> posited that the decline in quitting back to pre-pandemic levels signalled waning confidence and a US economy in trouble, especially in light of high-profile layoffs, smaller pay bumps and expected slower GDP growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Others argue it\u2019s merely a return to \u2018normal\u2019 as we recover from Covid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span><em>The average rate of quitting in the US since it started collecting this data in 2000 is around 2%. The ABS is due to release updated figures in July 2024.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.abs.gov.au\/statistics\/labour\/employment-and-unemployment\/labour-force-australia\/latest-release\">Unemployment in Australia<\/a> increased to 4.1% in April 2024 (from 3.8% in March) in seasonally adjusted terms. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s still low compared to over 7% after Covid struck, between May to July 2020 \u2014 but forecasts are for continued labour market weakening.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"791\" month, while applications per job ad are rising.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>But here\u2019s where it gets interesting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The number of open positions is still <em>higher<\/em> than pre-Covid levels, while the number of applicants for each job is just about back to pre-Covid levels. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, demand from employers remains strong, but supply is starting to stabilise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Seek ANZ\u2019s Managing Director, Kendra Banks, said:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span><em>\u201cUnemployment remains low, but candidate activity continues to rise, with applications per job ad increasing in ten of the past twelve months, indicating that Australians are open to change.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What Does It Mean For The Economy And Your Career?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Writing for Bloomberg, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/opinion\/articles\/2024-03-07\/the-great-resignation-is-now-the-big-stay\">Jonathan Levin says<\/a> that whether the drop in US workers quitting is due to positive factors (wage growth) or negative factors (wavering labour market), it could ease concerns that \u201coverly tight labour markets and too-hot wage growth\u201d will fuel further inflation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rba.gov.au\/publications\/smp\/2024\/may\/outlook.html#3-2-the-domestic-outlook\">Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) also predicts<\/a> that \u201cthe closing of output and unemployment gaps\u201d will help balance Australia\u2019s economy \u2014 with inflation expected to drop back into the target 2%-3% range by the end of 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/will-australia-go-into-recession\/\">Will Australia Go Into A Recession?<\/a>)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In forecasts released in May 2024, the RBA said unemployment will reach 4.2% by year-end. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also says inflation will ease faster than an anticipated decline in wage growth, meaning real incomes should increase.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span><em>Combined with a decrease in hiring, this could result in more Australian employees \u2018hunkering down\u2019 as they ride out easing cost of living pressures.<\/em><\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>However, people are still switching jobs because the reasons for The Great Resignation remain relevant today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People are still resisting return-to-office mandates and seeking more flexible and progressive workplace cultures and conditions, such as a four-day work week. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gartner\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gartner.com\/en\/human-resources\/topics\/future-of-work\">Future of Work report 2024<\/a> shows many employees now feel attending the office every day \u201cis simply too costly\u201d, and that employers will have to address the issue to attract and retain great people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Talented people with in-demand skills still have leverage.
