That represents a minimum hourly wage of $24.10.<\/em><\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s just over $33 more each week in gross income (before tax), compared to 2023. This year\u2019s increase was considerably less than the 5.75% increase that took effect in July 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In making its decision to increase the national minimum wage and all modern award minimum wages, the FWC acknowledged the cost of living pressures many households are experiencing due to stubbornly high inflation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Related: <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/cost-of-living-in-australia\/\">What Is The Real Cost Of Living In Australia?<\/a>)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But despite the wages of low-income workers going backwards in real terms (e.g. not keeping pace with price rises), the Commission said: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span>\u201c\u2026it is not appropriate at this time to increase award wages by any amount significantly above the inflation rate, principally because labour productivity is no higher than it was four years ago and productivity growth has only recently returned to positive territory.\u201d<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table><thead><tr><td>&nbsp;<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\"><strong>July 2023<\/strong><\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\"><strong>July 2024<\/strong><\/td><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td><strong>Minimum Wage Per Hour.<\/strong><\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">$23.23<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">$24.10<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Minimum Wage Per Week.<\/strong><\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">$882.8<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">$915.90<\/td><\/tr><tr><td><strong>Annual Inflation Rate (CPI).<\/strong><\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">6.0% (June quarter)<\/td><td class=\"has-text-align-center\" data-align=\"center\">3.8% (June quarter)<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What\u2019s The Minimum Wage For Casual Employees?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In a job with no set hours or a firm offer of ongoing work, it&#8217;s critical to get paid at the right casual rate to help offset the fact you don\u2019t receive other benefits like paid leave for sickness and holidays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>Casual workers are entitled to 25% loading<\/strong> on top of the national minimum wage of $24.10 per hour.<\/li><li><strong>You should earn at least $30.25 per hour<\/strong> if you\u2019re a casual employee in Australia.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A specific casual pay rate may be defined by the award rate relevant to your occupation. Nearly half of all workers covered by minimum wage rates in modern awards are casuals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What\u2019s The Difference Between National Minimum Wage And Minimum Award Wages?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The National Minimum Wage is the standard rate of pay for workers who aren\u2019t covered by a modern award or an enterprise agreement. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That could include low-paid workers as well as senior managers who don\u2019t fit into the available awards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span><em>In reality, the National Minimum Wage directly affects a very small percentage of Australian workers.<\/em><\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The Fair Work Commission\u2019s annual wage review also impacts the minimum wages payable to employees covered by one of 121 modern awards that apply to workers in various industries and occupations, as negotiated through unions and other industrial relations processes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span><em>Around 20% of the Australian workforce is covered by minimum hourly and weekly wage rates included in modern awards.<\/em><\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re paid at minimum wage rates established under an award, you should also have seen a 3.75% increase in your pay packet as of this July.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, let\u2019s say you\u2019re a crew member at a fast food chain. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>You\u2019ll likely be covered<\/strong> by the Fast Food Industry Award, with mandated pay rates now starting at $25.65 an hour and $974.80 a week (for adults in full and part-time roles). That\u2019s 6.4% more than the national minimum wage.<\/li><li><strong>Depending on the award,<\/strong> you may also be entitled to a higher rate of pay (penalty rates) for working at night, early mornings, on weekends and public holidays.<\/li><li><strong>The FWC provides tools<\/strong> to help you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairwork.gov.au\/employment-conditions\/awards\/find-my-award\">find the right award<\/a> for your industry and to <a href=\"https:\/\/calculate.fairwork.gov.au\/FindYourAward\">calculate the rate of pay<\/a> you should be getting, including for overtime or shift work.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Minimum Wage For Young People And Trainees.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The FWC\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fwc.gov.au\/documents\/awardsandorders\/pdf\/pr773884.pdf\">annual wage review order<\/a> defines what\u2019s known as \u2018special national minimum wages\u2019 for apprentices, trainees and workers under 21 years old. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This allows for a lower rate of pay than the National Minimum Wage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Minimum Wage For An Apprentice.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The lowest base rate you can expect to be paid as an apprentice is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>$567.76 a week<\/strong> in your first year if you\u2019re under 21 years old. This is based on 55% of the minimum weekly rate for a full-time employee on Level 3 pay scale ($1032.30) of the <em>Miscellaneous Award 2020.<\/em><\/li><li><strong>$825.84 a week<\/strong> in your first year if you\u2019re an adult (21+). This is based on 80% of the minimum weekly rate for a full-time employee on Level 3 pay scale under the award<em>.<\/em><\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Minimum pay rates go up in subsequent years of the apprenticeship.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Minimum Wage For A Trainee.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The minimum rate of pay you\u2019re entitled to as a trainee is set out in the <em>Miscellaneous Award 2020 <\/em>as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>$398.70 a week <\/strong>if you enter training straight out of leaving school in Year 10<em>, <\/em>and studying a Certificate Level I\u2013III.<\/li><li><strong>Up to $809.70 a week<\/strong> if you completed more schooling and also have 3-5 years of additional experience, when studying a Certificate Level I\u2013III. The type of industry qualification influences how high the rate is.<\/li><li><strong>$743.40<\/strong> to $840.40 per week in your first year if you\u2019re completing a Certificate Level IV traineeship. It depends on the training package you\u2019re undertaking.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:60px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Minimum Wage For A 13-Year-Old.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The minimum wage for a 13-year-old in Australia is 36.8% of the national minimum wage, which is $8.86 per hour based on full-time and part-time work.
