Some recruiters have replaced them with video introductions, and Hilton hotels recently asked candidates to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.afr.com\/work-and-careers\/careers\/hilton-wants-job-applicants-to-send-a-60-sec-tiktok-not-their-cv-20231112-p5ejbg\">record TikToks<\/a> to apply for roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Experienced executive recruiter Nikki Byrne from Macquarie Bank said that the rise of AI had made cover letters \u201cincreasingly standardised,\u201d making them less relevant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span>\u201cI don\u2019t see the cover letter as an important tool anymore,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:42px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>But The Cover Letter Isn&#8217;t Dead.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Successful entrepreneur and host of the\u00a0<em>How to Win<\/em>\u00a0podcast, Peep Laja, argues that a \u201cpersonalised, thoughtful cover letter\u201d helps you stand out, and you should always send one. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, he warned that AI use would be obvious and mean \u201cyou\u2019re instantly out\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite competing points of views \u2014 the fact is, a cover letter gives you an extra potential opportunity to sway recruiters and hiring managers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it can only work if your cover letter is compelling and strengthens the positive impression made by your resume.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span><em>The upshot: if you\u2019re going to write a cover letter, you\u2019d better make it good.<\/em><\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no template you can blindly apply, but you can use this guide and the examples we share below to create an impressive cover letter. It should shape the business.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>If your team is ever looking for a strategic operator who understands how to grow brand equity and bottom-line value \u2014 I\u2019d love to explore whether I could contribute to your next chapter.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Warm regards,<br>[Your Name]<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Biggest Cover Letter Misconceptions To Avoid.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The first no-no when it comes to cover letters is thinking that you just need to regurgitate details a recruiter can already find in your resume. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cover letter\u2019s purpose is to complement your resume, demonstrate your genuine interest, and give the employer a glimpse of your personality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(Related: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/about-me-in-resume\/\"><strong>How To Write A Strong \u2018About Me\u2019 Resume Section<\/strong><\/a><strong>).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the biggest misconception around cover letters is that you don\u2019t need one, because recruiters don\u2019t read them anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span><em>Unless an employer specifically asks you not to, including a cover letter in your application is wise to give yourself an edge.<\/em><\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>To be clear, there\u2019s no argument that your resume is the more important document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But surveys of people in charge of hiring show cover letters do help determine who they\u2019ll interview or hire, to a non-negligible degree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>Multiple studies<\/strong> have shown that around 80% of recruiters and hiring managers read and value a tailored cover letter during their screening process.<\/li><li><strong>In one study, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.resumego.net\/research\/cover-letters\/\">65%<\/a>\u00a0of hirers said the cover letter <em>materially influenced<\/em> their decisions.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>You can\u2019t know for sure if the recruiter or hiring manager will barely skim your cover letter or read it line-for-line (the recruitment process is mysterious and important). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span>Why wouldn\u2019t you embrace a bonus opportunity to win them over?<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The only reason for no cover letter, or a generic cover letter, is that you don\u2019t believe the job is worth the effort. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But your lack of effort could be the reason you don\u2019t make the cut \u2014 it\u2019s a chicken and egg situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2025, there are two key reasons cover letters may be even more important:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>Fewer jobs are being listed<\/strong> but the total <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theglobalrecruiter.com\/applications-rise-jobs-fall\/\">number of applications<\/a> per job is increasing, meaning you\u2019re being judged against a larger pool of candidates. If you\u2019ve got a similar resume to others, your cover letter could be the differentiator.<\/li><li><strong>Not enough <em>qualified<\/em> candidates<\/strong> is a major source of stress for HR teams in some sectors. If your resume isn\u2019t quite a perfect match for the role, your cover letter can help \u2018fill the gaps\u2019 to prove you\u2019re worth progressing to the next step.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If you know it\u2019s a highly competitive role or that your experience doesn\u2019t align as closely with the job requirements, a great cover letter is a must.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Should AI Write It? Think Twice.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, artificial intelligence (AI) tools have become a new way to write a bad cover letter. When I say bad, I mean boring and pointless.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ChatGPT and other AI-powered writing tools work by feeding the underlying model large amounts of data so it can learn to recognise patterns and reliably \u2018predict\u2019 the next word in a sentence needed for it to make sense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span><em>AI applies probabilities to imitate the stale writing style of cover letters generally \u2014 it can\u2019t produce something specific or distinctive to you.<\/em><\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>And if multiple candidates use the same AI tool and input the same job ad specs, the chances of your cover letter standing out are zero to none.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HR expert and workplace thought leader Liz Ryan said the strongest job applications come from deep insights into what you want from a job and why \u2014 as you are the expert on you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span><em>\u201cUnfortunately, you only hamper the process and harm yourself by outsourcing your own, human exploration and reflection to a piece of software,\u201d Ryan said.<\/em><\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Numerous hiring managers have taken to LinkedIn recently to vent their frustration about AI-generated drivel that they find an immediate turn-off. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s worse? I\u2019m excited to sink my teeth into strategic initiatives to drive business growth at a company known for innovative tools like <\/em><a href=\"http:\/\/widget.com\"><em>widget.com<\/em><\/a><em>, which I personally use and love.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As you describe your motivations for joining a team, make it more impactful by providing evidence that your interests are aligned with their interests. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That requires some research into the employer, and being able to tie it back to your credentials and experiences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, you might include a paragraph like this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span><em>\u201cIt was great to see that you recently acquired the sustainable fuels market leader ABC Co. as I\u2019m passionate about a clean energy future.
