Instead, the costs are capitalised and recorded as an asset on your balance sheet.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Australian Tax Office (ATO), in addition to depreciating assets and their installation, a capital expense can include money spent on:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>Setting<\/strong> up your business. <\/li><li><strong>Improving<\/strong> or expanding it, and even&#8230;<\/li><li><strong>Closing<\/strong> it down.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>This doesn\u2019t include general maintenance or repairs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ed Chan from Nash Advisory <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nashadvisory.com.au\/resource-centre\/repairs-and-maintenance-versus-capital-expenditure\">said<\/a> routine activities like fixing a broken machine or getting a work car serviced need to be expensed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Whereas improvements that provide an \u201cenduring benefit\u201d to the business of at least 12 months or more &#8211; like replacing a fence or building renovations &#8211; can be capitalised. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span>&#8220;In essence, if an expenditure prolongs the life of an asset, it falls under capex,\u201d Chan said.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(Related: <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/best-accounting-software-for-small-business\/\"><strong>Best Accounting Software For Australian SMBs<\/strong><\/a><strong>).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Why Is Capex Beneficial To Business Growth?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Capitalising an expense means you\u2019ll be able to claim tax deductions based on the asset\u2019s decline in value over time, which is called depreciation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Head of Tax at Melbourne-based Liston Newton Advisory, Stewart Lane, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.listonnewton.com.au\/information-centre\/what-is-depreciation-in-accounting\">explains<\/a>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span><em>\u201cDepreciation in tax accounting means that over time you\u2019re able to claim the entire value of a business asset off your taxable income. This tool helps you keep track of what you own and the depreciation calculations that flow through to other financial reports.<\/em><\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll need to determine the depreciation method you\u2019ll use.
