The <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/steelcase-gesture-office-chair-review\/\">flagship Gesture was underwhelming<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/steelcase-series-1-review\/\">entry-level Series 1 felt overpriced<\/a>. I&#8217;m left with a Leap and a Series 2. Both are my current WFH daily drivers on days I&#8217;m not in my <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/coworking-spaces-sydney\/\">coworking space<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But which one is better? The difference in backrest padding is particularly evident here.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which chair feels more cushy?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Definitely the Leap, for two reasons:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>Seat pan:<\/strong> The Leap has noticeably thicker padding.<\/li><li><strong>Backrest<\/strong>: The Series 2 has no padding at all. Just fabric stretched over a ventilated plastic frame.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The Leap\u2019s seat and back are also more contoured. They cradle your body. The Series 2 doesn\u2019t.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Net result: the Leap delivers a softer, more relaxed, lounge-style sit. If that&#8217;s what you want, the story ends here. Go out and buy the Leap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/herman-miller-embody-office-chair-review\/\">Herman Miller Embody: Why People Pay $3,500 For It<\/a>).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But comfort with cushiness is not always the same thing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When tasking, I want a chair that will help me stay productive &#8211; rather than sending me to sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where the Series 2 has an advantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some people &#8211; myself included &#8211; will appreciate its unemotional vibe when tasking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re a sports car person, the comparison will make immediate sense. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span>One chair makes you feel like you&#8217;re sitting in a luxury SUV. The other one? Like you&#8217;re in a sports car.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Your workday habits will determine which chair feels more comfortable. Both flex to facilitate movement.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the Leap flexes further &#8211; and with less effort. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through both the seat pan and the backrest. It&#8217;s almost comically pliable. The Series 2, meanwhile, offers a more stoic vibe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Armrests on both chairs are almost identical. The mechanisms are the same, but the Leap&#8217;s armcaps are slightly larger. In day-to-day use, the difference is negligible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span>Lumbar, meanwhile, is taut on both chairs &#8211; without being overly aggressive. <\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>You can target the C-curve of your spine using small tabs on either side of each chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But only the Leap gives you the option to make the lumbar feel less aggressive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At its weakest setting, it&#8217;s noticeably more friendly than the Series 2&#8217;s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Winner:<\/strong><\/td><td>Steelcase Leap<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Tension is limited to a single setting. And even then, it\u2019s too loose. Big props from me.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Conventional wisdom dictates that design is subjective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I call BS.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s something your uncle, who drives a beige Corolla, likes to tell himself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both chairs exude a safe office aesthetic. Steelcase isn&#8217;t known for creating garish, attention-seeking masterpieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span>But the Series 2 is distinctly more edgy.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It was launched in 2020, while the V1 version of the Leap dates back to 1999. And this age cap shows up in subtle design cues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My favourite is the total absence of reinforcement on the Series 2&#8217;s frame. <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/best-ergonomic-office-chair\/\">Most ergonomic office chairs<\/a> use a combination of external spines or support braces to keep the backrest sufficiently rigid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Leap has a thin one extending from its base and looping across its backrest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Series 2, meanwhile, eschews it altogether &#8211; and relies only on the backrest&#8217;s material to stay stiff. Priced at about $2,000, the Leap is about 50% more expensive (depending on how you spec it).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it&#8217;s technically two chairs in one &#8211; a tasking chair, and an ergonomic lounging chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re not planning to lounge, recline and kick back during your workday, and are unlikely to regularly do 8-12 hour workday stints, the $1200 Series 2 suddenly looks like excellent value for money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Winner:<\/strong><\/td><td>Steelcase Series 2<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. It doesn&#8217;t protrude forward.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the easiest call I&#8217;ve ever had to make. Both chairs have the exact same build quality, warranty periods and assembly options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both are built like tanks. Both offer 12 years of coverage. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And Steelcase will deliver both within Australian metro areas fully assembled &#8211; for an extra $50.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table class=\"has-fixed-layout\"><tbody><tr><td><strong>Winner:<\/strong><\/td><td>Tie<\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>My Verdict On The Steelcase Leap vs Steelcase Series 2.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Delete 50% of the padding from the Leap and replace its recline mechanism with an inferior one (from a Series 1 office chair) &#8211; and you get a Steelcase Series 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh, and reduce the price by about $800.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your decision will come down to how you spend your workdays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the Leap&#8217;s not-so-subtle message is &#8220;settle in and get comfortable for the long day ahead&#8221;, the Series 2&#8217;s is &#8220;sit up, shut up, and start your 2-hour productivity sprint now!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not to say that the Series 2 is uncomfortable. Far from it. But it does send a distinctly different signal from your body to your brain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you like to recline during your workday?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leap&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/herman-miller-aeron-vs-steelcase-leap\/\">hip-thrust recline isn&#8217;t as comfortable as the Aeron&#8217;s<\/a>, but it is still one of the best around. It will also let you dial in the precise amount of tension you need. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Series 2, meanwhile, tries to keep up with its bigger brother &#8211; but struggles. It makes you feel like you&#8217;re falling backwards in a dream &#8211; Inception-style &#8211; rather than reclining.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For me, the Leap is the all-around superior chair.
