It&#8217;s true &#8211; you can churn one out using ChatGPT or Claude AI. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But AI was trained on millions of resumes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span>Most of those resumes were terrible. <\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>So AI is replicating what was terrible. That\u2019s why automating candidate application and screening processes has been a long-held recruiter goal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI is making their dreams come true (but creating new nightmares for job seekers).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research from consulting firm BCG <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bcg.com\/publications\/2025\/ai-changing-recruitment#:~:text=One%20of%20the%20key%20advantages,future%20needs,%E2%80%9D%20Bedard%20explains\">finds<\/a> that of the companies experimenting with AI, 70% are using it for talent acquisition \u2014 and it\u2019s noticeably increasing their admin productivity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This helps reduce costs while keeping hiring timeframes short.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A 2025 <a href=\"https:\/\/elmosoftware.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/ELMO_HR-Industry-Benchmark-Reports_2025.pdf\">survey<\/a> of over 1,200 HR professionals in Australia and New Zealand showed that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>The average time-to-fill<\/strong> a role in Australia was 19 days (up a smidge from 18 days in 2024).<\/li><li><strong>The average cost <\/strong>of hiring a new employee had decreased ($18,600 vs $20k in 2024).<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>AI automation is seen as driving those kind of efficiencies \u2014 as evidenced by over 30% of Aussie HR pros describing the tech as \u201ctransformative\u201d and 57% saying they were increasing their budget for AI tools.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span><em>The trade-off? AI is slowly sucking the life out of hiring, with fewer chances to interact with a real human.<\/em><\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Recruiters want to ditch more of the \u2018busy work\u2019 by using AI for writing job ads and candidate emails, long-listing massive amounts of applications, scheduling interviews, and even conducting first-round interviews \u2014 as big brands like Woolworths and Bunnings have embraced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s supposed to give them time to focus on high-value human work. Like assessing short-listed candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But getting on that shortlist is tough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some grim facts facing job seekers right now:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>Job vacancy<\/strong> numbers are waning. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abs.gov.au\/statistics\/labour\/jobs\/job-vacancies-australia\/latest-release#media-releases\">ABS data<\/a> reveals a -6.8 annual drop in the number of private sector jobs being advertised in the year to Nov 2025.<\/li><li><strong>Applicants<\/strong> per job advertised is surging. Applicants per role have nearly doubled since late 2022, LinkedIn data <a href=\"https:\/\/au.finance.yahoo.com\/news\/aussie-job-market-hit-by-the-great-squeeze-as-number-of-applications-per-role-surges-004329920.html\">shows<\/a>.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Fewer openings, more competition, and automated screening means you\u2019ll need both luck and timing when applying via traditional routes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Applicant Tracking Systems and other AI-powered recruiting platforms can assess applications almost immediately after you\u2019ve hit \u2018submit\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span><em>And as soon as a recruiter fills their slate of 8-10 candidates that meet the core job requirements, they start putting those resumes in front of the hiring manager.<\/em><\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>On top of unknowable criteria and algorithms potentially ruling you out \u2014 you can be perfectly qualified for a role, but arrive too late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Understandable then, that if you\u2019re job hunting, AI can seems like the best way to speed up your application process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can use AI to create and tailor resumes, find and quickly apply to multiple jobs, do mock interviews, and even generate interview responses if you get that far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But using AI to save your time and energy in this way represents a false economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Getting in first doesn\u2019t matter if your resume sucks. A professional-sounding, error free resume churned out by a bot is not the same as a resume that:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>Shows<\/strong> how you made a real and meaningful impact or applied your skills in previous roles.<\/li><li><strong>Convincingly<\/strong> explains why you can add value in a specific role, in a way nobody else can.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>AI Is Dragging Down The Quality Of Job Applications.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite a faster hiring process, employers are still desperate for quality, especially in mid-tier professional and executive-level roles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span><em>LinkedIn\u2019s research found that 77% of Australian recruiters say finding qualified talent has worsened, a increase from 68% last year.<\/em><\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a huge trust and credibility chasm emerging because AI is capable of making every resume sound competent and professional, in the same cliched or over-the-top fashion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s creating four key risks for job seekers using AI to grow their careers:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>Your<\/strong> AI-generated resume won\u2019t stand out in the flood of applications recruiters receive.<\/li><li><strong>Your<\/strong> resume passes screening but it\u2019s so disconnected from reality you can\u2019t progress further.<\/li><li><strong>You<\/strong> get the job but can\u2019t meet expectations, meaning you face dismissal and embarrassment.<\/li><li><strong>People<\/strong> talk, and word spreads that you lack substance unless AI is talking you up.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Firstly, AI resumes that all sound alike (because AI models <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/use-ai-to-write-resume\/\">learn by copying<\/a>) make it hard for recruiters to differentiate between similar candidates. Not because you chose to use a tool for writing help, but because they can\u2019t believe what your resume says.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over 80% of Aussie employers <a href=\"https:\/\/cfotech.com.au\/story\/australian-firms-face-challenges-with-ai-driven-resumes\">said<\/a> they\u2019d noticed inaccurate information in AI-generated resumes, and a notable increase in under-qualified applicants (54%), according to a 2025 survey of over 500 firms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Australian recruitment expert Michelle Rubinstein, a former Recruitment, Consulting &amp; Staffing Association (RCSA) Recruiter of the Year, recently said she favours communicating with candidates by phone for this very reason.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She <a href=\"https:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/posts\/mrubinsteinrecruitment_that-post-i-shared-the-other-week-about-picking-share-7424661589477388288-8j7v\/?utm_source=share&amp;utm_medium=member_desktop&amp;rcm=ACoAAATfYIkBXxquqVMlsSvgVp3RzaVvLr8-UPE\">recalls<\/a> the case of having to reject a candidate who, on paper, appeared to be an \u201cabsolute slam dunk,\u201d because when she called them they:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>Couldn\u2019t<\/strong> explain the role they\u2019d applied for or recognise what it was when she mentioned it.<\/li><li><strong>Struggled<\/strong> to talk through their skills or \u201cthe achievements boldly noted on their CV\u201d.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Rubinstein said that after some digging, the truth came out that an AI-tool had auto-applied on the candidate\u2019s behalf and rewritten their CV for the job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span><em>\u201cAI didn\u2019t help this candidate get the job. But in isolation \u2014 without personal reflection or thoughtful insights from a trusted mentor \u2014 an AI\u2019s outputs will always be too generic (and obvious).<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>As HR consultant Jessica D. Winder <a href=\"http:\/\/www.linkedin.com\/pulse\/hiring-political-act-accordingly-jessica-d-winder-0hkxc\/\">highlights<\/a>, AI can help tighten your stories, but it can\u2019t replace your lived experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span><em>\u201cIf you allow it to invent metrics or exaggerate outcomes, you will get exposed under pressure. Anything on your resume should be defensible in a live conversation,\u201d Winder said.<\/em><\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If you really want to take back some control, a more proactive job search is possible. But it\u2019s not easy. You need to <em>do all the things<\/em>, and do them consistently and well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The core pillars include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>A<\/strong> <strong>high quality resume<\/strong> with multiple, tailored versions based on job titles you\u2019re focused on.<\/li><li><strong>An up-to-date LinkedIn profile<\/strong> with targeted, fleshed out \u2018About\u2019 and \u2018Experience\u2019 sections.<\/li><li><strong>Focused networking <\/strong>targeting specific people and industries, and actually asking for referrals.<\/li><li><strong>Registering with <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/best-recruitment-agencies-australia\/\">recruitment agencies<\/a> and being responsive to their requests (it can\u2019t hurt).<\/li><li><strong>Direct outreach<\/strong> at scale, to get in front of senior business leaders and uncover hidden jobs.<\/li><li><strong>Well-practiced communication skills,<\/strong> so you can pitch your strengths and interview well.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t have to reach \u2018influencer\u2019 levels of visibility. You just have to get known within the circles of people with influence over hiring in your desired companies or sectors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span><em>Keep in mind, the recruiters who are giddily embracing AI tools to streamline hiring are not your networking or cold outreach targets.<\/em><\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>You want to initiate conversations with the hiring managers whose day-to-day problems you\u2019ll actually be solving. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike in-house recruiters whose job it is to sort through the AI slop applications, hiring managers are the leaders who make the case for a new hire, and make the final hiring decisions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>HR teams act as the gatekeeper, partly in an attempt to keep recruitment consistent and fair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But let\u2019s be honest \u2014 you need an unfair advantage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Career coach Lucy Gilmour calls it \u201cboss hunting\u201d. She suggests you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>Start<\/strong> from an organisation\u2019s LinkedIn company page. Select the \u2018People\u2019 tab, and then use the search bar to enter the most likely job title of your potential future boss. For instance, \u2018Head\/Director of [Function]\u2019 or \u2018Team Leader\u2019 or even the CEO of a small to mid-sized company.<\/li><li><strong>Review<\/strong> the profiles of relevant employees, and then use an email scraping tool (e.g., <a href=\"http:\/\/adapt.io\">adapt.io<\/a> or Hunter.io Chrome extension) to see if there\u2019s an available email address for that person. You can send a message via LinkedIn but it\u2019s not the best channel for capturing attention.<\/li><li><strong>Reach<\/strong> out via email with a brief email about the vacancy and a clear explanation of your suitability for the job, with a compelling, well-written resume attached. Let them know you\u2019re keen to speak with them about the role, or any other opportunities that arise.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Bypassing an ATS or AI resume screening tool isn\u2019t a panacea for getting noticed. You may still be ignored. But catch a hiring manager on the right day, with the right pitch \u2014 and your foot is firmly in the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span><em>As the Australian Institute of HR points out: \u201cHiring managers\u00a0are often eager to interview candidates as soon as they come in, especially when candidates seem highly qualified.\u201d<\/em><\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>AI Resumes Have Eroded Trust. Take A Different Path.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>AI misgivings are pervading every step of the recruitment process.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sydney-based recruiter Chloe Cashman said she knows hiring managers running virtual interviews now have doubts about whether they\u2019re assessing real capability or \u201cwell prompted answers\u201d derived from AI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span><em>\u201cPolished isn\u2019t the differentiator anymore. I genuinely foresee things going full circle more in person conversations where possible and greater emphasis on soft skills,\u201d Cashman said.<\/em><\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>With the way AI resumes and AI-assisted answers have muddied the waters, we\u2019ll likely see some HR teams revert to more traditional methods to engage with candidates for important roles, even if it adds time and costs \u2014 in the interests of improving hiring quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Become the kind of candidate who shows up in the right places to get noticed.
