{"id":125150,"date":"2026-06-08T10:34:39","date_gmt":"2026-06-08T10:34:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/?p=125150"},"modified":"2026-06-21T05:26:14","modified_gmt":"2026-06-21T05:26:14","slug":"your-career-just-got-expiry-date","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/your-career-just-got-expiry-date\/","title":{"rendered":"The Career You Spent 20 Years Building Just Got A New Expiry Date"},"content":{"rendered":"<span class=\"span-reading-time rt-reading-time\" style=\"display: block;\"><span class=\"rt-label rt-prefix\">Reading Time: <\/span> <span class=\"rt-time\"> 3<\/span> <span class=\"rt-label rt-postfix\">minutes<\/span><\/span>\n<p>I was recently interviewed by an Australian media publication about the ways AI will reshape our workforce. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m reposting the conversation below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re worried about your career &#8211; and want strategies for protecting it &#8211; this Q&amp;A will help you think about the future more clearly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is the value of work in the age of AI?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A lot of human workplace value used to live in production. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You got praise for sending memos, managing busywork, producing spreadsheets and making PowerPoint presentations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if production wasn&#8217;t directly your job (e.g., designer), it likely contained a significant amount of production work (e.g., sales teams preparing for client meetings and creating tenders).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/executive-job-search-masterclass\/\">How To Get More Job Interviews And Job Offers<\/a>).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AI made production cheap and abundant. Anyone can now produce a slick deck or a clean prototype in minutes. So human value relocates to three things:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>Judgement<\/strong>. Assessing risk, deciding which option to back, defining what &#8220;done&#8221; means, and recognising when AI output is off.<\/li><li><strong>Human persuasion.<\/strong> Reading a room and convincing some of the people in it to to back your idea, or to buy your service.<\/li><li><strong>Agent management.<\/strong> Getting machines to do what you want. Preferably at scale.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>To preserve your career, you need to be strong in at least two of these domains. If you want to be a rare asset, you need to be a master of all three.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What does the future of jobs look like in an AI-driven economy?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For entry-level workers, work will shift from doing tasks to managing AI agents.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There will be fewer mid-level managers, and the survivors will do less busywork and more architecting of hybrid agentic\/human teams. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span>Managers who spent decades hiding behind paper-shuffling are most at risk.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Executives will &#8211; for the first time in history &#8211; be capital allocators of companies with near-infinite production capacity. Their job will shift from asking \u201ccan we build it?\u201d to \u201cwhat is actually worth building?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once the decision is made, their role will be to lead rapid, iterative experiments that validate or refute it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How will people earn a living as certain roles and salary structures evolve or disappear?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Let me give you the bad news. A lot of people will lose their jobs &#8211; despite what Sam Altmans of the world are telling us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span>The roles that vanish first will be the narrow, do-the-task ones. <\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Software developers and content writers are feeling it already, with most now spending their days managing agents instead of writing code or polishing prose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The good news is that it won\u2019t be an \u201ceveryone is out of work\u201d scenario. It will be a flip in what we view as scarce. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a century, production talent was expensive and scarce.&nbsp;Soon, talent will be available on demand for a price approximating the cost of electricity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-create-block-tip-block tip-wrapper\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\"col-md-12\"><div class=\"card-wrapper\"><div class=\"card-title\"><div class=\"icon\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" viewBox=\"0 0 20 20\" fill=\"none\"><path fill-rule=\"evenodd\" clip-rule=\"evenodd\" d=\"M7.5 14.33a5 5 0 1 1 5 0v4.17h-5v-4.17Zm4.25-1.3-.75.44V17H9v-3.53l-.75-.44a3.5 3.5 0 1 1 3.5 0Z\" fill=\"#656E83\"><\/path><path d=\"M9.25 1v2h1.5V1h-1.5ZM5.53 4.47l-1.5-1.5-1.06 1.06 1.5 1.5 1.06-1.06ZM15.53 5.53l1.5-1.5-1.06-1.06-1.5 1.5 1.06 1.06ZM1 10.75h2v-1.5H1v1.5ZM17 10.75h2v-1.5h-2v1.5Z\" fill=\"#656E83\"><\/path><\/svg><\/div><h3 placeholder=\"Tip Title Goes Here\">Important!<\/h3><\/div><div class=\"card-content\"><p placeholder=\"Tip Content Goes Here\">What will be rare is knowing what to ask for, knowing how to direct it and recognising when the output is good enough.\u00a0<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s where the money will be &#8211; you&#8217;ll earn a living by climbing out of the doing and into the judging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:41px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What are your broader thoughts on the future of work?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>My view is that the standard career pathways will reorder. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For decades, people followed a similar preordained path: school, tertiary education, then the corporate world. A few weirdos like me decided to rebel and become entrepreneurs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I think it will shift to: school, tertiary\/entrepreneurship hybrid stint. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span>This stint will have a sorting function.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>People with an aptitude for entrepreneurship will continue on that track. People who don\u2019t will get corporate jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s my logic. If the most valuable skill ahead is judgement, you won&#8217;t be able to obtain it from theory.
