The war is on. That&#8217;s what I could not stop thinking about as I was assembling the UpDown Ergo Elite in my home office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Every part I lifted out of the box gave me a case of d\u00e9j\u00e0 vu. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not only because I&#8217;ve assembled 25+ chairs  over the past 5 years (and sometimes every chair part looks the same), but because the parts reminded me of a chair I&#8217;m familiar with &#8211; my current <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/best-ergonomic-office-chair\/\">favourite mid-range ergonomic chair<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/ergotune-joobie-office-chair-review\/\">ErgoTune Joobie<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UpDown partnered with ErgoTune&#8217;s supplier to bring a nearly-identical competitor to market. Broad angled edges at shoulder level contrast nicely with curves in the seat and the armcaps.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On first impression, the Ergo Elite is a remarkably comfortable chair. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I find that the first time you lower yourself into any chair, you immediately register either a &#8220;hmm, not sure about this&#8221; or a &#8220;hell yeeeees&#8221; type of experience. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span>The Ergo Elite belongs in the latter camp for sure.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The bucket design has a contoured seat and backrest, and these add up to make you feel cradled &#8211; almost hugged &#8211; from all sides. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>15 adjustment points make it easy to find your ideal ergonomic position. Best-In-Class Armrests.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ergo Elite&#8217;s armrests are the strongest part of the chair. I can&#8217;t fault them &#8211; almost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span>Creating the perfect armrest is almost impossible &#8211; because everything is a trade-off. <\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For example &#8211; if you make the armcaps soft, their durability will suffer. If you have a habit of pushing off your armrests as you stand up, you\u2019ll inadvertently change the tilt.\u00a0And if you lean on the armcap too much, it will pivot out, changing the angle and the width. Expect to readjust yours quite a few times per day.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:65px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Two-Piece Lumbar Support.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"750\" src=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/updown-ergo-elite-office-chair-4-1024x750.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-126362\" srcset=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/updown-ergo-elite-office-chair-4-1024x750.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/updown-ergo-elite-office-chair-4-300x220.jpg 300w, https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/updown-ergo-elite-office-chair-4-768x563.jpg 768w, https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/updown-ergo-elite-office-chair-4.jpg 1331w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Above: Dual lumbar pads have a gap in the middle that can dig into your back.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Speaking of the Sihoo S300, that was the only other chair I ever encountered that had a two-piece lumbar support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span>It&#8217;s a novel solution to frequent complaints people have about excessive lumbar firmness. <\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>While a single horizontal pad can feel like a hard roll always pressing into your back, two independently hinged pads can offer more comfort &#8211; because they are better at contouring themselves to your back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That&#8217;s the theory, at least. What does it feel like in practice?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Exactly as intended. Much better than a single roll design, actually. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span>Surprisingly, the Ergo Elite&#8217;s lumbar is quite strong &#8211; even at the lowest setting. <\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I was expecting something gentle &#8211; probably the two pads <em>look<\/em> gentle &#8211; but the real-world experience is that of an urgent, confident pressure against the C-spine. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-create-block-tip-block tip-wrapper\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\"col-md-12\"><div class=\"card-wrapper\"><div class=\"card-title\"><div class=\"icon\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" viewBox=\"0 0 20 20\" fill=\"none\"><path fill-rule=\"evenodd\" clip-rule=\"evenodd\" d=\"M7.5 14.33a5 5 0 1 1 5 0v4.17h-5v-4.17Zm4.25-1.3-.75.44V17H9v-3.53l-.75-.44a3.5 3.5 0 1 1 3.5 0Z\" fill=\"#656E83\"><\/path><path d=\"M9.25 1v2h1.5V1h-1.5ZM5.53 4.47l-1.5-1.5-1.06 1.06 1.5 1.5 1.06-1.06ZM15.53 5.53l1.5-1.5-1.06-1.06-1.5 1.5 1.06 1.06ZM1 10.75h2v-1.5H1v1.5ZM17 10.75h2v-1.5h-2v1.5Z\" fill=\"#656E83\"><\/path><\/svg><\/div><h3 placeholder=\"Tip Title Goes Here\">Important!<\/h3><\/div><div class=\"card-content\"><p placeholder=\"Tip Content Goes Here\">It&#8217;s both strong and inoffensive &#8211; perfect for people like me, who love strong lumbar support, but don&#8217;t want to feel like Mike Tyson is punching me in the kidneys every day. <\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>You can make it friendlier using an independent depth control knob. Height control is also possible, but it&#8217;s synced to the backrest height control &#8211; much like the <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/ergotune-office-chair-review\/\">original ErgoTune Supreme<\/a> was. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span>The only downside of the two-pad lumbar design is the unavoidable gap in the middle. <\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>You can feel it against your back if you move off-centre &#8211; especially if you also recline. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s not enough to become irritating, but it does mean the backrest doesn&#8217;t eventually disappear, as it tends to with single-piece backrest chair designs like the <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/steelcase-series-2-office-chair-review\/\">Steelcase Series 2<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/haworth-fern-office-chair-review\/\">Haworth Fern<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:65px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>4. Mazel tov! <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>None of the chair&#8217;s body panels feels flimsy or cheap to the touch. Lock it in a tasking position, and you feel zero wobble. What kind of sorcery is this, UpDown? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the build quality of the controls is a mixed bag. Some are fantastic while some are just &#8220;meh&#8221;. It&#8217;s as if every one of them was designed by a different team:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>Lumbar<\/strong> depth control knob feels wobbly and cheap-ish.<\/li><li><strong>Dynamic<\/strong> backrest adjustment switch next to it is wonderfully tactile (and unfortunately, as I&#8217;ll discuss in a moment, you probably will never use it).<\/li><li><strong>Armrests<\/strong> make satisfying, expensive, metal-on-metal clicking sounds as they move.<\/li><li><strong>Seat<\/strong> pan height and recline levers feel mushy.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Thing is, these are purely UX observations. I&#8217;m not worried about the controls&#8217; longevity &#8211; because all major components are covered by UpDown&#8217;s outstanding 10-year warranty, which I&#8217;ll discuss in a moment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m also not worried about the longevity of the chair&#8217;s mesh. It&#8217;s certainly on the more utilitarian side, and what it trades off in softness it gains in robustness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:65px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. Premium luxury brands like Herman Miller and Steelcase offer 12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UpDown decided to offer 10. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And they&#8217;ll cover the most important stuff, too &#8211; i.e., mechanisms and structural components.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span>That is an insane amount of warranty for a chair that retails for less than $700.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Chairs aren&#8217;t just a piece of furniture. They&#8217;re a statement about our identity &#8211; and we tend to outgrow them psychologically in parallel to wearing them out physically.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A 10-year warranty means you&#8217;re far more likely to &#8220;feel ready&#8221; for a new chair than the chair falling apart on you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which is excellent &#8211; and means you spend roughly $70 bucks a year for the next decade on seating. Bargain. That means that ubiquitous &#8220;ergonomic&#8221; look, with a bulky backrest and a plethora of controls on full display.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>However, some brands are better than others at stylising them &#8211; and the Ergo Elite is one of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I particularly like the chair&#8217;s front and 3\/4 front angles &#8211; they remind me of the premium Humanscale designs, like the Liberty. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span>The aesthetic contrasts square-ish edges in the backrest with softer curves in the seat pan. <\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>And the same square-ish edges differentiate the chair from the plethora of el cheapo ergo chairs, which for some reason always look like they&#8217;re melting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:65px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3 Things I Dislike About The <strong>UpDown Ergo Elite<\/strong>.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Ergo Elite has a few issues. As far as I can tell, it unsyncs the backrest and the seat pan, allowing you to lean back without changing the angle of the seat.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>But in reality, it just reduces the depth of the seating position when you lean back, making the chair a little bit less comfortable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Worse, it does this with a sudden mechanical &#8220;clunk&#8221; that catches you off guard when it happens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I never use it. You&#8217;ll never use it. Ignore it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:65px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Even a little bit? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, I would love to see an ergonomic chair at a $700-ish price point with a solid backrest that hides all the controls within it. Like the Fern does.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just sayin&#8217;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. No Recline Tension Control.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve left the worst till last.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Where&#8217;s the recline tension control, UpDown? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By not including it, you&#8217;ve turned off everyone who likes to sit with the recline unlocked, balancing the tension against their body weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span>That includes me. <\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I weigh 110 kg, and leaving the lock open means I rapidly travel backwards until I&#8217;m in the (admittedly impressive) 150-degree recline position.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People who weigh roughly 80 &#8211; 85 kg will be fine &#8211; because their weight will roughly match the default tension of the chair. But lighter people will remain stuck upright, while people like me will be stuck lying down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m not sure how much money UpDown saved by not speccing this feature, but I&#8217;m sure it wasn&#8217;t a lot. This is a hard one. The Ergo Elite is an excellent chair, and is outstanding value for the price. But is it better than the OG &#8211; the ErgoTune Joobie?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span>Possibly. Depends on what you value more.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Its warranty and armrests are the standout features.
