According to Tufts University&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/fletcher.tufts.edu\/eBiz\/fletcher.tufts.edu\/~\/media\/Fletcher\/Microsites\/Planet%20eBiz\/EBIZ_DigitalPlanet_FINAL.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Digital Planet Report<\/a>, Australia\u2019s digital evolution is falling behind the rest of the world, sitting firmly in the \u2018stall out\u2019 quadrant of the findings, reserved for &#8211; ahem &#8211; digital dunces like Finland, Japan, the Czech Republic, and, yes, Australia.<\/p>\n<p>When you consider the fact that Australia\u2019s digital economy &#8211;\u00a0estimated at $79bn\u00a0&#8211; is larger than agriculture, retail and transport, it\u2019s a big deal to consider that we\u2019re not keeping pace.<\/p>\n<p>Add to that <a href=\"http:\/\/rewrite.ca.com\/us\/articles\/digital-transformation\/lessons-learned-from-the-digital-disrupters.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">these\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/rewrite.ca.com\/us\/articles\/digital-transformation\/lessons-learned-from-the-digital-disrupters.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">findings<\/a>, which\u00a0show that the most digitally innovative businesses in any industry are also the most economically successful, and it\u2019s a problem worth considering.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/best-accounting-software-for-small-business\/\">Best Accounting Software For Your Business<\/a>).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of course, when you dig a bit deeper, it\u2019s not all doom and gloom.<\/p>\n<p>This HBR visualisation shows that while Australia is indeed no longer moving forward at the same pace we have in the past, our progress isn\u2019t receding too rapidly, either:<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-55290 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/australia-in-digital-age-1024x985.jpg\" alt=\"australia in digital age\" width=\"640\" height=\"616\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Combine that with some notable bright spots, and there\u2019s a lot to learn. UNSW\u2019s Business Dean, Mark Uncles, agrees:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><em>\u201cIt\u2019s not as if &#8230; Australians have their head in the sand and they\u2019re unaware of what\u2019s happening in the rest of the world&#8230;we have pockets of expertise, with examples of where things are cutting edge.\u201d<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Pockets of expertise? Examples of cutting edge?<\/p>\n<p>If that\u2019s not an invitation to dig deeper, I don\u2019t know what is.<\/p>\n<p>And so I set out down the Internet rabbit hole, combing press releases, consultant and academic reports, YouTube videos, and news stories to answer the two burning questions I\u2019ve been asking myself: what is the biggest challenge that Australian senior leaders are facing when it comes to leading their companies into the digital age, and how can they\u00a0navigate the transformation effectively?<\/p>\n<p><strong>(Related Article: <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/future-of-work-in-australia-emma-hogan\/\">The Future Of Work In Australia<\/a>).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re looking for surgical precision, this isn\u2019t the post for you. Like the digital transformation, the themes I uncovered are interconnected and inseparable.<\/p>\n<p>In my opinion, they\u2019re also completely fascinating.<span id=\"Outside_Embrace\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"blog-post-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h2><b>Embracing The Outside-In.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Remember this now infamous <em>Rumsfeldism<\/em> from 2002, when the US was in a fuss about Iraq\u2019s possible weapons of mass destruction?<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><em>&#8220;..there are known knowns; there are things we know we know. We also know there are known unknowns; that is to say we know there are some things we do not know. But there are also unknown unknowns \u2013 the ones we don&#8217;t know we don&#8217;t know.&#8221;<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>As it happens, <em>unknown unknowns<\/em> are a huge challenge for leaders\u00a0driving digital evolution, and from the looks of it, Australian business\u00a0leaders\u00a0are guiltier than their global counterparts in bothering to uncover them.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pwc.com.au\/consulting\/assets\/publications\/pwc-digital-iq-2015-australia.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">PwC\u2019s 2015 Global Digital IQ Survey<\/a>, \u201conly 14% of leaders in Australia say they network with other companies, as opposed to 23% globally.\u201d Further, Australian companies \u201ccould extract even greater value from digital through better connections externally.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>(Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/guide-to-capital-expenditure-capex\/\">Ultimate Guide To Capex For SMBs<\/a>).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>What does that mean in practice?<\/p>\n<p>Telstra\u2019s new <a href=\"http:\/\/exchange.telstra.com.au\/2015\/08\/04\/welcome-future-innovation-telstra-gurrowa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gurrowa Innovation Lab<\/a> in Melbourne is a prime example of building external connections.<\/p>\n<p>Opened in August, 2015, the lab partners Telstra\u2019s top talent with that of its enterprise customers and vendors, research organisations, and incubators, combining the best minds, technology and resources to solve digital innovation challenges.<\/p>\n<p>Writes Vish Nandlall, Telstra\u2019s CTO:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><em>\u201cWe want to think big, solving customer challenges such as the Internet of Things (IoT) and designing intelligence into solutions through data analytics and deep learning&#8230;To achieve this, we need to bring the best practices from across the world.\u201d<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"blog-post-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h2><b>Stepping Up to Multi-Speed.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/advice-to-business-leaders-how-to-build-a-solid-business-strategy-for-the-digital-age-qa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">my recent interview<\/a> with Carlo Gagliardi, leader of PwC\u2019s <i>Strategy for the Digital Age<\/i> Practice, Gagliardi was quick to point out that <em>\u201cstrategy and execution are no longer sequential&#8230;they are peers.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a theme that comes up again and again.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/how-to-improve-team-performance\/\">How To Double Your Team&#8217;s Performance<\/a>).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While no one\u2019s suggesting established businesses adopt Facebook\u2019s early mantra to <em>move fast and break things<\/em>, locked away annual and five-year strategies no longer work if they\u2019re the sole approach to business planning.<\/p>\n<p>According to Andrew Walduck, Executive General Manager of Trusted Services at Australia Post, \u201cwe now live in an era where how we work is as important as what we work on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Australia Post, that means <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalpulse.pwc.com.au\/ceda-multi-speed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a three-speed approach<\/a>, combining traditional, long-lead strategy; break-neck startup agility; and an in-between speed, whereby well-planned approaches are executed to tight timelines.<\/p>\n<p>By mixing all three approaches within one company, Australia Post can gain the benefits of both blue chip planning and startup agility.<span id=\"Focus_New\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>(See Also: <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/resume-writing-services\/\">Top-Rated Australian Resume Service<\/a>).<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"blog-post-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h2><b>Focusing On The New Cs.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Tasked with leading the digitisation of Australia Post, Walduck has a deep wealth of knowledge on the subject, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=qsMydg5poHA&amp;feature=youtu.be\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pointing out<\/a> that\u00a0management thinking needs to shift from a machine-age focus on employee productivity, to a digital-age focus on employees\u2019 creative capabilities and customer-centricity.<\/p>\n<p>In 2015, neither employees nor customers want to be told what to think, do or want.<\/p>\n<p>Employees want ownership, impact and recognition.<\/p>\n<p>And in some ways, so do customers; think of companies like Airbnb, which allows hosts to \u201cdevelop\u201d products, and Twitter, which was famously <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ted.com\/talks\/evan_williams_on_listening_to_twitter_users?language=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">shaped as much by its users as its Founders<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"http:\/\/knowledge.wharton.upenn.edu\/article\/the-right-leadership-style-for-the-digital-age\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">this piece<\/a> on the Wharton School of Business\u2019 Knowledge@Wharton blog: the most profitable companies are those whose most valuable assets are relationships and ideas, and executives are willing to relinquish some control so customers and employees can shape the future growth trajectory.<\/p>\n<p>Consultant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.digitalpulse.pwc.com.au\/ceda-multi-speed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Philip Otley agrees<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><em>\u201cThe impetus to put the connected customer at the centre of everything you do creates amazing opportunities for businesses to rethink their products and services.\u201d<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"blog-post-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h2><b>Introducing a Hacker Culture.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>The term <i>hacker<\/i> gets a bad wrap, conjuring up images of teenage savants stealing classified data from the comfort of their parents\u2019 wood-panelled basements.<\/p>\n<p>But according to Mark Zuckerberg, that\u2019s not fair: \u201cHackers believe that the best idea and implementation should always win \u2014 not the person who is best at lobbying for an idea or the person who manages the most people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What does it mean to implement hacker culture within an established blue chip?<\/p>\n<p><strong>(Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/how-to-start-a-small-business-australia\/\">How To Start A Small Business In Australia<\/a>).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In June 2015, QANTAS<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cio.com.au\/article\/576391\/an-inside-look-qantas-hackathon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u00a0<\/a>decided to find out, holding its first-ever &#8211; and wildly successful &#8211; hackathon.<\/p>\n<p>A collaboration between the company\u2019s Digital Innovation Team and the digital advisors behind the <a href=\"http:\/\/disruptorshandbook.com\/us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Disruptor\u2019s Handbook<\/a>, the event gave non-QANTAS coders and developers 30 hours to create ground-up solutions and prototypes to solve a real-world problem facing the business.<\/p>\n<p>Remember that no one person or job title has a monopoly on good ideas. Demanding a meritocracy and encouraging creativity from every level of the business &#8211; and even outside the business &#8211; can help executives drive digital evolution.<\/p>\n<p>As one of the judges at QANTAS\u2019 event noted:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><em>\u201cHackathons are a direct route to new entrepreneurial thinking &#8230; that corporates would be remiss to ignore\u2026\u201d<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"blog-post-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h2><b>Contributing To An Ecosystem.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Five years ago, Singapore\u2019s IT and Internet Tech start-up scene was non-existent.<\/p>\n<p>Today, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.edb.gov.sg\/content\/edb\/en\/news-and-events\/news\/singapore-business-news\/Feature\/southeast-asias-innovative-start-up-boom.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">42,000 startups later<\/a>, one in 10 working-age Singaporeans are in the process of founding or running a startup, and Singapore is well on its way to establishing itself as the Silicon Valley of SE Asia.<\/p>\n<p>How did they do it?<\/p>\n<p>Singapore\u2019s long-standing emphasis on science and technology education certainly didn\u2019t hurt. Ultimately, it\u2019s been a collaborative effort, combining business- and startup-friendly government policies, a strategic location vis-\u00e0-vis China, and an army of willing innovators.<\/p>\n<p>In Australia, recent events suggest the tide is starting to turn, beginning with recent minting of\u00a0&#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/internet.org.au\/news\/132-8-september-2015-news-release-internet-australia-at-parliamentary-friends-of-the-internet-launch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">friend of the Internet<\/a>&#8220;,\u00a0aka Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.<\/p>\n<p>This year also marked Australia\u2019s first-ever policy hack, a collaboration between the Minister for Innovation and industry to remove government barriers to innovation, digitisation and business, more generally.<\/p>\n<p>The winning idea of this inaugural event was an initiative to start entrepreneurial thinking and skills in primary school.<\/p>\n<p>Like the outside-in thinking mentioned above, the most digitally successful business recognise digitisation doesn\u2019t occur in a bubble, proactively engaging at each opportunity with government, stakeholders, customers and industry colleagues to create a pro-digital ecosystem.<\/p>\n<p><strong>(Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/leadership-western-eastern-cultures\/\">7 Rules For Western Executives Leading Teams In China &amp; India<\/a>).<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"blog-post-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h2><b>Technology Is Not A Panacea.<\/b><\/h2>\n<p>Finally, I\u2019d be remiss to write an entire post about digital evolution without mentioning what many Australian executives would argue is at the heart of digital innovation: technology.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, when compared to countries with the highest digital IQs, more Australian business and IT executives believe digital is synonymous with techology. And it seems as though that\u2019s to our detriment.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.pwc.com.au\/consulting\/assets\/publications\/pwc-digital-iq-2015-australia.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">According to PwC<\/a>: among Australian respondents (of a global survey), there was a \u201cgreater propensity to blame outdated technology for failed digital initiatives, to funnel the greatest proportion of digital budgets into IT, or to defined \u2018digital\u2019 solely in the context of technology-related innovation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On that note, digital transformation designed solely around IT seems destined to fail, especially when you consider it within the context of my above points: employee creativity, customer participation, stakeholder and partner engagement, and meritocracy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA <a href=\"http:\/\/www.pwc.com.au\/consulting\/assets\/publications\/pwc-digital-iq-2015-australia.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">truly \u2018digital\u2019 business<\/a>\u00a0is one that focuses on wider issues of disruption, engagement, digitisation and trust. Technology should be viewed as a means of enabling this. Real transformation is about holistic business change and leadership buy-in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What do you think?
