After all, you know they can perform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bringing a little bit of the known with you as you leap into the great abyss can lend a lot of comfort. And, if you\u2019re a beloved leader, that same talent may be begging to head overboard with you &#8211; or at least heavily hinting at the possibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What should you do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Is it wrong to take them with you? Or do they deserve the opportunity to come along, if they so wish? Do your homework.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If you didn\u2019t personally sign a non-compete and you\u2019re going to a competitor, your former employer may have an overarching non-compete agreement with your new employer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:61px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The Apple vs Google Poaching Affair.<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some time ago, an <a href=\"http:\/\/time.com\/42322\/steve-jobs-chilling-response-after-getting-a-google-employee-fired\/\">email exchange between Steve&nbsp;Jobs and Eric Schmidt<\/a>&nbsp;was shared publicly on this very topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The punchline is: a Google recruiter was fired on the spot for even contacting an Apple engineer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you\u2019re moving from one part of a company to another, check with your HR Business Partner before you fire up your recruitment software and start cherry-picking your new team.<span id=\"Culture\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Have You Considered The Culture?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As a leader, you have the responsibility to <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/what-is-transformational-leadership-rebecca-lee\/\">hire the best team for the future of your new organisation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But here\u2019s the rub &#8211; its culture may be vastly different from where you\u2019ve been.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you\u2019re moving to another organisation in the same company, the same dynamic may apply. In the American version of \u201cThe Office\u201d, the episode called <i>Branch Wars<\/i> sheds humour on this potential conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Karen threatens to poach Stanley for the Utica branch, Michael asks Pam (his receptionist) to get Utica\u2019s top salesperson on the line:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><em><strong>Pam<\/strong>: I have Ben Nugent on the. He\u2019s the top salesman in Utica.<\/em><\/li><li><em><strong>Michael<\/strong>: Hi Ben, Michael Scott.<\/em><\/li><li><em><strong>Ben<\/strong>: Hi Michael.<\/em><\/li><li><em><strong>Michael<\/strong>: I\u2019m going to cut right to the chase here. Do you like magic? Because I\u2019m a genie in a bottle and I\u2019m going to grant you three wishes. To move to Scranton, to have a great job, and to be my best friend.<\/em><\/li><li><em><strong>Ben<\/strong>: Aren\u2019t you the guy who hit the woman with your car?<\/em><\/li><li><em><strong>Pam<\/strong>: [giggles]<\/em><\/li><li><em><strong>Michael<\/strong>: [To Pam] Get out. [To Ben] Uh, yeah. I also saved her life, but I guess that\u2019s not as grabby.<\/em><\/li><li><em><strong>Ben<\/strong>: Everyone says Scranton Branch is worse than Camden. Didn\u2019t everyone form Stanford quit, like immediately?<\/em><\/li><li><em><strong>Michael<\/strong>: No, I fired them, and you\u2019re next \u2026 So what do you say?<\/em><\/li><li><em><strong>Ben<\/strong>: Seriously?<\/em><\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Comic interlude aside, don\u2019t discount the culture and the talent where you\u2019re going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No matter how good you are, you\u2019ll need a support system of colleagues who are in the know\u2014people with history and context.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People who are already succeeding and can help you start your new role like a rock star.<span id=\"Employee\"><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:41px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Have You Considered The Employee?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For a moment, think about the other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employees who thrived in one environment with you <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2017\/09\/as-your-company-evolves-what-happens-to-employees-who-dont\">may not thrive in another<\/a>. Before you approach someone to poach, think hard about why.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Are you putting your needs before what might be best for them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If so, this could be a wake-up call to check your ego at the door. Otherwise, you risk alienating an employee who was formerly loyal to you. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span>Whether or not you believe in karma, bridge-burning can damage even the best reputation.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember the Golden Rule. How would you want to be treated if you were in their shoes?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Don&#8217;t Take The Easy Option.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Take the time to figure out what\u2019s needed in your new environment before you assume that what worked before will work again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span>Look at your trusted team members with fresh and critical eyes. Assess them as you would any prospective candidate for fit in your new culture.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Push yourself beyond your codependence (don\u2019t worry, we\u2019re all a little bit that way) to be the best hiring manager possible. You never know, you may just be able to find a better candidate than the one who feels cosy and familiar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Final Words About Employee Poaching.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In his book Fire in the Belly, writer and philosopher Sam Keen says there are two questions you must ask yourself in life: The first is &#8216;Where am I going?&#8217; and the second is &#8220;Who will go with me?.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He then points out that if you ever get these questions in the wrong order, you are in trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leaders, I&#8217;ll leave you with one final piece of advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be bold enough to go where you\u2019re going alone.
