All of the things a recruiter would expect from a more junior-level candidate.<\/p>\n<p>Tasks and responsibilities say nothing about <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/personal-value-proposition\/\">your unique ability to solve commercial business problems<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Buzzwords simply fill space.<\/p>\n<p>You end up with a dull executive resume that has no power to sell you.<\/p>\n<p>Allow me to illustrate:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><em>&#8220;Highly skilled, multifaceted leader, responsible for directing organisational change program, implementing new business process improvements, systems and people and encouraging improved efficiencies, effectiveness and reduced costs.&#8221;<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This sentence fails to demonstrate why you should be hired over any of the other executives that you\u2019re competing against.<\/p>\n<p>Worse, it makes you look like everyone else.<\/p>\n<p>Compare it with:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><em>&#8220;I turned the business around from 2 consecutive years of loss to achieve an EBIDTA growth CAGR of 39% between 2022 and 2024. For example:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><em>&#8220;To obtain an executive position in a Fortune 500 company where I can utilise\u00a0my management skills.&#8221;<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>While this is a valid goal, it should not take up the most precious real estate on your executive resume. <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/how-to-write-a-resume\/\">Replace it with a <em><strong>&#8220;Professional Profile&#8221;<\/strong><\/em> section instead<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog-post-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h3><strong>2. My bet is,\u00a0it&#8217;s a lot more than 14%.\u00a0Point is &#8211; it&#8217;s best to include a cover letter, even if just to be safe.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog-post-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h3><strong>3. Hammer Home Your Achievements.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As I indicated earlier, your resume is not just a summary of your titles\u00a0and responsibilities. You must <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/how-to-write-highly-persuasive-resume-achievements\/\">illustrate your value through a\u00a0strong list of your achievements<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Use strong verbs and, wherever possible, quantify your wins. For example:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><em>\u201cReached X objective(s) every quarter for Y quarters in a row exceeding target by Z%.\u201d<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Or..<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><em>\u201cSaved $10 million annually by reducing fixed spending by 10% and variable overhead spending by 14% through cost-improvement initiatives.\u201d<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Or..<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><em> \u201cImproved customer service satisfaction by 4% annually through supply chain management initiatives and flexible manufacturing practices.\u201d<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"blog-post-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h3><strong>4. Use Australian English.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I speak with many executives who have spent a considerable part of their career in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>For them, the line between Australian and US spelling has become blurry and they use, for example, \u201cspecialise\u201d and \u201cspecialize\u201d interchangeably.<\/p>\n<p>When applying for a role in Australia, remember that it\u2019s best to demonstrate your familiarity with the local culture by ensuring that <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/resume-grammar-check-resume-grammatical-errors\/\">Australian spelling and grammar are used throughout<\/a> your executive resume.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog-post-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h3><strong>7. Do Not Include References.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This is another hotly debated topic amongst HR professionals, recruiters and executive resume writers. Some will tell you to leave them out, others will tell you that they&#8217;re essential.<\/p>\n<p>In my experience, <em><strong>\u201cReferences Available Upon Request\u201d<\/strong><\/em> works\u00a0best\u00a0in the current Australian context.<\/p>\n<p>Referee information <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/how-to-write-references-in-resume\/\">serves no useful purpose in the initial stages of the process<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog-post-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h3><strong>8. Make It Look Great.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Avoid cramming your executive resume with text in an attempt to &#8220;fit it all of the relevant information&#8221;.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><em>Remember that recruiters of today are extremely UX (user-experience) sensitive.<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>They\u2019re used to consuming content through websites that are designed with readability in mind.<\/p>\n<p>An executive resume that is crammed to the brim with an 8-point font <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/what-should-resume-look-like\/\">will have no power to hold their attention<\/a> because they&#8217;re accustomed to skimming through content, rather than reading it.<\/p>\n<p>Use a font that <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/resume-font-size-australia\/\">I recommend in this guide<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog-post-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h3><strong>9. Do Final Checks.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>This point sounds almost too basic to be necessary to mention, but it&#8217;s a necessary one. Spell check your resume &#8211; by asking a friend or colleague to read over it.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><em>It amazes me how bad our brains are at picking up on the mistakes that we&#8217;ve made.<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>This happens to me every time I write a blog post. I often re-read it 3-4 times until I&#8217;m UTTERLY CONVINCED that there are no mistakes in it. Then I ask someone next to me to proofread it and they\u2019ll find 2-3 mistakes.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog-post-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h3><strong>10. Remove Your Photograph.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In Australia, including your photograph on your executive resume is completely and utterly unnecessary.<\/p>\n<p>If you are hoping that your professional good looks will <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/behavioural-interview-questions\/\">get you an interview<\/a>, they most likely will only get you a few laughs going around the recruiter&#8217;s office.<\/p>\n<p>I know, because I&#8217;ve seen it happen. Don&#8217;t have it happen to you.<span id=\"DOB_Marital_Religion\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"blog-post-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h3><strong>11. Remove Your DOB, Marital Status And Religious Beliefs.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Again, unnecessary.<\/p>\n<p>You don&#8217;t want <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/should-you-include-your-date-of-birth-on-your-resume\/\">your age or religious dispositions<\/a> to influence recruiters. Do not include any information that could be used to discriminate against you.<\/p>\n<div class=\"blog-post-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h3><strong>12. Avoid The Shotgun Approach.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Do you have a habit of hitting &#8220;APPLY&#8221; button a few dozen times each day, uploading the same (or similar) executive resume for each role?<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s easy to tell.<\/p>\n<p>Usually, it means that your executive resume and cover letter will be not perfectly aligned to each other and\/or to the role. Other tell-tale signs are: you get the recruiter&#8217;s name wrong, you make a mistake when writing the job name, date it was advertised, etc.<\/p>\n<p>Some of my executive clients have told me that, before they came to see me, they&#8217;ve applied for about a dozen roles per week.<\/p>\n<p>Doing this has ongoing consequences &#8211; the recruiters remember your name and begin to associate it with &#8220;that person who spams me every time I advertise&#8221;.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><em>The recruiting world is smaller than you think; if you drag your name through the dirt, it will be more difficult to get a call-back even when you put a good application in.<\/em><\/h3>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"blog-post-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h3><b>13. Kill Off The Buzzwords.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Great writers don\u2019t rely on clich\u00e9s for the same reason great resume writers don\u2019t rely on buzzwords: they lack power. They\u2019re not forceful; they don\u2019t demand attention.<\/p>\n<p>At best, buzzwords take up space without working hard enough to create an impact. At worst, they give the impression that you\u2019re hyperbolic and your achievements are hollow.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of propping up your executive resume with buzzwords, think more deeply about what you\u2019re trying to convey and both show \u2013 by sharing an example that highlights the quality or skill in question \u2013 and tell\u00a0it in a different way.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re in doubt over what constitutes a buzzword, here are some common choices we see on executive resumes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Detail-oriented.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Results-driven.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self-motivated.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proactive.<\/span><\/li>\n<li>Strategic thinker.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>For instance, instead of saying \u2018<em>strategic thinker<\/em>\u2019 you could say \u2018<em>a perceptive and visionary leader with an eye for opportunity<\/em>\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>You mustn\u2019t stop here, though.<\/p>\n<p>An executive resume isn\u2019t just a collection of words. Rather, it\u2019s a way of expressing your deep and authentic value statement. Your resume is the tip of the iceberg, if you like- and the bulk of the power comes from the story you weave to showcase your positive attributes.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><em>In other words, if you\u2019re describing yourself as \u2018strategic\u2019, your resume should include numerous achievements that illustrate your strategic ability.<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div class=\"blog-post-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h3><b>14. Don&#8217;t Be Subservient.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>Imagine that your executive resume is a building.<\/p>\n<p>As with any building, the materials you use throughout will dictate what the building looks like. This, in turn, will dictate how the building is perceived.<\/p>\n<p>The verbs you use in your executive resume are the bricks \u2013 and concrete breezeblock will give a different impression to redbrick or marble.<\/p>\n<p>If you don\u2019t build your executive resume using verbs that are appropriate to your level of seniority, you won\u2019t come across as a top-tier executive (<a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/action-verbs-resume\/\">read my full guide to using action verbs in a senior-level resume<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Even if the task you describe are fundamentally the same, the language you use will establish your seniority in relation to that task \u2013 and you will be judged on that basis.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><em>It works both ways, by the way.<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Not so long ago I was working with an executive who wanted to make a lateral, if not a slight downwards, career move. Every recruiter she sent her old resume to disregarded her as overqualified.<\/p>\n<p>By using more seniority-appropriate language, we were able to reposition her in relation to the roles she wanted, and she found a new position almost immediately.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s the power of nuance.<\/p>\n<p>Unless you\u2019re actively looking to diminish yourself, as our client above was, scrap the following verbs from your executive resume:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Managed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supported.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Assisted.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Handled.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coordinated.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Performed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As an executive, it\u2019s taken for granted that you\u2019re managing, supporting, assisting and so on.<\/p>\n<p>If you need to include those responsibilities in your executive resume, the implication is that you\u2019ve done so because they\u2019re noteworthy \u2013 which they shouldn\u2019t be at your level.<\/p>\n<p>Your credibility gets undermined, and you appear less senior than you are. Verbs like this are more appropriate for an executive resume:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Steered.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Championed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shaped.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Established.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spearheaded.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pioneered.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Founded.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transformed.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The key takeaway is this: pay attention to the nuance of the verbs you choose for your executive resume to avoid making a less-senior impression than you intend to.<span id=\"Unnecessary_Pomposity\"><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"blog-post-spacer\"><\/div>\n<h3><b>15. Cut Down On Unnecessary Pomposity.<\/b><\/h3>\n<p>This is the other side of the coin. Although it\u2019s important to use executive-level language, you should be wary of falling into the pompous camp.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve all known someone who disguises their lack of seniority by using intentionally convoluted language and phraseology.<\/p>\n<p>When you\u2019re writing your executive resume, always look for simple and concise ways to express yourself. Don\u2019t be bombastic.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t choose complicated words when simple ones will do. Keep your sentence construction simple and easy to read, and use adjectives like seasoning \u2013 a few can enhance the dish but too many are overpowering.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t be flowery.
