I\u2019m here to show you what interviewers and hiring managers want to know between the lines of that question, and how to structure a response that helps you ace the interview and win the job.<\/p>\n

But first, why do interviewers ask you a question like “why do you want to work for us?” or “why do you want to work here?”<\/p>\n

There are many ways to answer the \u2018why do you want to work for us?\u2019 conundrum.<\/p>\n

But before I go into how to prepare a response that\u2019s right for you – here are some guidelines as to what interviewers don\u2019t want to hear:<\/p>\n

1. The Overly Generic, Uninformed Response.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Answers such as, “I\u2019ve heard it\u2019s a great company and I\u2019d like to be a part of its success” are more common than you would think. It\u2019s agreeable enough, but vague.<\/p>\n

Not only does it suggest that you haven\u2019t taken the time to research the company, it won\u2019t help you stand out in a crowded pool of candidates.<\/p>\n

<\/div>\n

2. The Apathetic Response.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

One of the biggest turn-offs for an interviewer is a lack of enthusiasm. No matter how experienced or qualified, a candidate who can\u2019t demonstrate a genuine interest in the role will only get so far in the interview process.<\/p>\n

3. The Money-Focused Response.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Answers that lead with references to remuneration and benefits suggest that you are primarily motivated by money.<\/p>\n

    Being well-informed helps interviewers see how serious you are about the role. Start with the company website, paying particular attention to the \u2018About Us\u2019, \u2018Careers\u2019 and \u2018Press Releases\u2019 pages.<\/p>\n

    The \u2018About Us\u2019 page should provide valuable information about the company\u2019s history, organisational structure and mission statement.<\/p>\n

    Crucially, it typically includes a listing of the company\u2019s leadership team, which is particularly useful if a member will be conducting or sitting in on your interview. Familiarise yourself with faces, career histories and personal interests.<\/em><\/h3>\n<\/blockquote>\n
