Sedentary work can lead to physical problems, and as a result, more people are investing in <u><a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/best-standing-desk-australia\/\">standing desks<\/a>.<\/u>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But standing desks alone are not a panacea. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You also need to exercise, which is why we compiled a set of exercises you can do either behind your desk (maybe even during a Zoom call) or while you&#8217;re on a break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We recommend the latter. The persistent strain on your neck leads to a condition called \u2018<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/living.life.edu\/slice-of-life\/tech-neck\/\"><u>tech neck<\/u><\/a>\u2019, which causes soreness and stiffness.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span>Over time, this can develop into chronic mobility issues.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>You can incorporate this simple stretch that loosens up your neck area and loosen your shoulders:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>Reach for the spine: <\/strong>Lift your arm up, bend it, and attempt to touch your neck vertebrae.<\/li><li><strong>Feel the stretch: <\/strong>Use your other arm to gently press down on the elbow and deepen the stretch. It will also open your shoulders and chest and prevent slouching.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To do this:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>First, check that your standing desk<\/strong> can support your weight.<\/li><li><strong>Ensure you have a non-slip surface<\/strong> below you and your feet remain flat on the floor.\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>Start with your hands<\/strong> on the edge of your standing desk.<\/li><li><strong>Lean forward<\/strong> and push down into a push-up position.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Aim for 3 x sets of 12-15 push-ups throughout the day. Lower back pain is a common symptom.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Back extensions are ideal for performing near your desk, as they don&#8217;t need much space. You can do them in the <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/home-office-ideas-on-a-budget\/\">smallest of home offices<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To perform a basic back extension:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>Stand away<\/strong> from your desk with your feet shoulder-width apart.\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>Place your hands<\/strong> on either side of your hips.<\/li><li><strong>Lean backwards gently<\/strong> as far as you can go without straining.<\/li><li><strong>Hold this position for 10 seconds<\/strong> before slowly releasing and returning to a straight standing posture.\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>You can then lean forward<\/strong> and lengthen your spine in the opposite direction. Don\u2019t worry if you cannot touch your toes. They:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>Help improve <\/strong>lower-body strength and power.\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>Work for every major muscle<\/strong> group in the body \u2013 including your core, which helps keep you balanced when standing for long periods.\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>Increase the strength<\/strong> of your quads, glutes, and hamstrings.<\/li><li><strong>Do not require equipment<\/strong> (except the wall of your home office!).<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>We recommend:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>Start with sets<\/strong> of 15-30 seconds, building up to 60-90 seconds.<\/li><li><strong>Explore holds<\/strong> at different angles. Half of your sets should be in a deep squat, the other in a 1\/3 squat.<\/li><li><strong>Add one or two weights<\/strong> for an added challenge and resistance as you get stronger.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Ensure your technique is correct:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>Feet should be slightly<\/strong> wider than the hip stance.<\/li><li><strong>Adopt the sitting position<\/strong>, as if sitting in a chair.\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>Don&#8217;t cheat<\/strong> by pushing on your thighs with your hands.<\/li><li><strong>Ensure your knees<\/strong> don&#8217;t go past your toes.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. For standing crunches:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>Stand with your feet<\/strong> shoulder-width apart.<\/li><li><strong>Place your hands<\/strong> behind your head.\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>Bring your right knee<\/strong> to meet your left elbow, then return to the starting position.\u00a0<\/li><li><strong>You can also hold a dumbbell in one hand<\/strong> and lean towards the ground, using your abdominals, before standing up to attention (one side at a time).<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Aim for 15-20 reps on each side with all ab exercises. Ab work is also great for balance.
