More important than your business idea, your choice of a co-founder will either create a massive productivity boost or cripple your business.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet, most first-time business owners are terrible at choosing excellent business partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I sure was. Not knowing what to look for, I relied on mainstream advice (e.g., &#8220;pick your best friend!&#8221;) and paid with:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>Unnecessary<\/strong> conflict with my business partner.<\/li><li><strong>Unclear<\/strong> lines of responsibility.<\/li><li><strong>Poor<\/strong> communication.<\/li><li><strong>Low<\/strong> productivity.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Fifteen years and four successful businesses later, I&#8217;ve learned a lot about choosing great business partners and hope that by sharing my lessons, I&#8217;ll help you avoid some of my mistakes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/best-accounting-software-for-small-business\/\">Best Small Business Accounting Software<\/a>).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3 Key Characteristics Of Great Business Partners.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I assess my potential business partners through a 3-part checklist that I use to vet <em>everyone<\/em> on my team. I borrowed this idea from Naval Ravikant. Running a small business isn&#8217;t for everyone, and if you don&#8217;t over-index on these traits, it&#8217;s probably not for you, either.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How To Avoid Personality Clashes With Your Business Partner.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Internet is full of reminders that you must find a business partner who offsets your weakness. Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak are usually upheld as perfect examples of this business partnership style:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong><strong>Business partner 1:<\/strong><\/strong> charismatic salesman and people wrangler.<\/li><li><strong><strong>Business partner 2: <\/strong><\/strong>nerdy technical genius.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Silicon Valley angel investors and VCs agree with this philosophy of choosing business partners, almost never funding solo founders. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(Related: <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/coworking-spaces-sydney\/\">Best Coworking Spaces In Sydney<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/coworking-spaces-melbourne\/\">Melbourne<\/a>).<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They understand that perfect people don&#8217;t exist. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span>If you ever decide to launch a tech startup using other people&#8217;s money, you&#8217;ll need to find a business partner.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I agree with this approach, but recommend that you go a level deeper. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"790\" src=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/choose-a-business-partner-1024x790.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-88029\" srcset=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/choose-a-business-partner-1024x790.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/choose-a-business-partner-300x232.jpg 300w, https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/choose-a-business-partner-768x593.jpg 768w, https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/choose-a-business-partner-1536x1186.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/choose-a-business-partner.jpg 1640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>People&#8217;s skills are dictated by their personalities, so you&#8217;re much better off focusing on the latter. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span>In other words, focus on the drivers of the behaviour, rather than the behaviour itself.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The big 5 personality traits are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>Extraversion<\/strong>.<\/li><li><strong>Agreeableness<\/strong>.<\/li><li><strong>Openness<\/strong>.<\/li><li><strong>Conscientiousness<\/strong>.<\/li><li><strong>Neuroticism<\/strong>.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>You score on a spectrum from high to low on each of these, and you can test yourself (and your potential business partners) using a <a href=\"https:\/\/openpsychometrics.org\/tests\/IPIP-BFFM\/\">free online personality test<\/a> (it takes about 5 minutes).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Use the insights to decide which roles you and your business partner will perform in the business. Some thoughts to guide you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>Great salespeople<\/strong> are usually high on extraversion and openness. A highly neurotic, low extraversion business partner isn&#8217;t likely to succeed in a sales role.<\/li><li><strong>People who are low in conscientiousness<\/strong> tend to suffer from &#8220;shiny object syndrome&#8221; and abandon projects. If you&#8217;re low in this trait, find business partners who are the opposite &#8211; and put them in charge of making trains run on time.<\/li><li><strong>Agreeableness is a trait of pleasant<\/strong>, &#8220;nice&#8221; people, but early-stage entrepreneurship is often rough, fast-paced and full of difficult conversations.<\/li><li><strong>Early-stage business owners<\/strong> need to be high on openness, as an aversion to novel situations will tank the business. Even Golden Retrievers have been known to bite people.
