Speak Up In Meetings.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some people love the sound of their own voice, and they talk for the sake of it. But most of us sit, listen, and observe in meetings and video calls. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We often forgo the opportunity to ask questions when there is a pause or when the presenter invites the room to ask questions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why do we do that \u2013 sit there like statues?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span>We&#8217;re all so damn self-conscious these days that we&#8217;re afraid we&#8217;ll say something stupid in front of everyone. We&#8217;re a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ualberta.ca\/folio\/2020\/01\/millennials-and-gen-z-are-more-anxious-than-previous-generations-heres-why.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">generation of overthinkers<\/a>.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If you get anxious about speaking up, start by:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>Asking<\/strong> a concise question.<\/li><li><strong>Making<\/strong> a point succinctly. <\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>I know that&#8217;s easier said than done, and you&#8217;ve likely had some negative experiences in the past, but how many opportunities are you missing by not taking your shots?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe you rambled on too long before, and brain fog stopped you in your tracks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or you got flustered and forgot what the hell you were saying halfway through a sentence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;ve all been there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span>Joe Biden does it every day, and he&#8217;s the President of the United States of America.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s not easy, but take comfort in the fact that you&#8217;re not alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:59px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What is your deepest fear?<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Fears are deep-rooted, but what is your <em>deepest <\/em>fear?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;ve ever seen the film <em>Coach Carter<\/em>, you&#8217;ll know <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2_fDhqRk_Ro\">the scene I&#8217;m referring to<\/a>. The words are an excerpt from an inspirational poem written by Marianne Williamson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span>&#8220;Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure.&#8221;<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Your playing small does not serve the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Listen to the words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Feel them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if you&#8217;re not the type to get psyched up by the Hollywood melodrama, you&#8217;ll be able to relate on some level.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:39px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Support Your Colleagues&#8217; Projects.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If colleagues within your direct team are involved in projects, ask them if there&#8217;s anything you can do to support them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even if the project has been assigned exclusively to them, you may be able to pick some of the balls they&#8217;re dropping.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In many cases, however, supporting colleagues doesn&#8217;t necessarily mean you have to do their work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span>Be smart about it.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Look for opportunities to teach a person how to fish, rather than just giving them a fish.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Say you&#8217;re a wizard at Excel spreadsheets and know how to carry out SUMIF formulas, but one of your colleagues is counting data manually. If you&#8217;re great at supporting others, you are likely to get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.boredpanda.com\/labor-market-i-quit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inundated with more requests for help<\/a>.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s good to become the go-to person and be renowned for your expertise, but you must learn how to say no &#8211; and do it tactfully. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Always couch your reason for saying no in a professional light:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>&#8220;Because<\/strong> I won&#8217;t be able to finish the task on time due to my other commitments.&#8221;<\/li><li><strong>&#8220;Because <\/strong>I don\u2019t have the resources or knowledge to carry out the work successfully.&#8221;<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:39px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. Avoid Gossip &amp; Office Politics.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Every smart person knows this adage:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span>&#8220;People who gossip to you gossip about you&#8221;.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>If colleagues hear you gossiping about others, they&#8217;ll lose trust in you because they&#8217;ll fear you saying similar things about them behind their backs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Refrain from passing judgment if you find yourself entangled in a conversation about another colleague.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span>That goes both ways.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>You don&#8217;t have to agree with what&#8217;s being said, but you don&#8217;t have to expressly disagree, either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Simply steer the conversation towards an innocuous topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-create-block-tip-block tip-wrapper\"><div class=\"row\"><div class=\"col-md-12\"><div class=\"card-wrapper\"><div class=\"card-title\"><div class=\"icon\"><svg xmlns=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\" width=\"20\" height=\"20\" viewBox=\"0 0 20 20\" fill=\"none\"><path fill-rule=\"evenodd\" clip-rule=\"evenodd\" d=\"M7.5 14.33a5 5 0 1 1 5 0v4.17h-5v-4.17Zm4.25-1.3-.75.44V17H9v-3.53l-.75-.44a3.5 3.5 0 1 1 3.5 0Z\" fill=\"#656E83\"><\/path><path d=\"M9.25 1v2h1.5V1h-1.5ZM5.53 4.47l-1.5-1.5-1.06 1.06 1.5 1.5 1.06-1.06ZM15.53 5.53l1.5-1.5-1.06-1.06-1.5 1.5 1.06 1.06ZM1 10.75h2v-1.5H1v1.5ZM17 10.75h2v-1.5h-2v1.5Z\" fill=\"#656E83\"><\/path><\/svg><\/div><h3 placeholder=\"Tip Title Goes Here\">Expert Tip.<\/h3><\/div><div class=\"card-content\"><p placeholder=\"Tip Content Goes Here\">If you discover that you&#8217;re on the receiving end of gossip, the old &#8220;sticks-and-stones&#8221; mentality is your best line of defence. Don&#8217;t engage in tit-for-tat. It&#8217;s draining, and it&#8217;ll sap your energy.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>There are, of course, exceptions when it comes to dealing with harassment, bullying, and vicious rumours. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Contact HR if you have evidence of derogatory things being said about you or other colleagues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>6. Find That Sweet Balance.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Work you&#8221; and &#8220;outside-of-work you&#8221; are two different people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span>You might love clowning around, cracking inappropriate jokes, and swearing in the company of friends.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>But you&#8217;ll offend your colleagues at every turn if you don&#8217;t filter out some of that behaviour.
