Prentice points out in his classic essay &#8220;<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2004\/01\/understanding-leadership\">Understanding Leadership<\/a>&#8220;, leaders must learn two basic lessons to be successful:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>People are complex.<\/strong> Apart from carrots and sticks, people respond to patriotism, self-doubt, need for recognition and many other emotions.<\/li><li><strong>People are different.<\/strong> One team member may crave growth through feedback and be frustrated by the leaders&#8217; inability to provide it, while another team member may view any form of feedback as a threat to their self-esteem.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"790\" src=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/what-is-leadership-definition-1024x790.jpg\" alt=\"what is leadership definition\" class=\"wp-image-97388\" srcset=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/what-is-leadership-definition-1024x790.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/what-is-leadership-definition-300x232.jpg 300w, https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/what-is-leadership-definition-768x593.jpg 768w, https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/what-is-leadership-definition-1536x1186.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/what-is-leadership-definition.jpg 1640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:40px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5 Characteristics Of Effective Leadership.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The latest trend among leadership gurus is to neatly divide leaders into &#8220;toxic&#8221; and &#8220;non-toxic&#8221; varieties, encouraging you to be the latter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In their minds:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>Effective leadership<\/strong> encourages employees to grow and achieve personal goals as a by-product of contributing to organisational objectives.<\/li><li><strong>Toxic leadership<\/strong> relies on power imbalances, manipulation or force of personality to pressure and coerce others.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, this is a gross, unhelpful oversimplification (see Prentice&#8217;s rule #1 above).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most <a href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/conflict-in-the-workplace\/\">conflict between leaders and subordinates<\/a> leaves at least one party blaming the other for &#8220;toxic&#8221; behaviour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>(Related: <\/strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/arielle.com.au\/emotional-intelligence-in-the-workplace\/\"><strong>Why Is Emotional Intelligence At Work So Vital?<\/strong><\/a><strong>)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For instance, a CEO (let&#8217;s call him John) lets his VP of Growth (we&#8217;ll call her Susan) know that sales figures need to improve. Susan reacts defensively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>Both parties feel disrespected<\/strong> and misunderstood, spending days sharing victim-villain stories that paint their own perspective in a favourable light to any colleague who will listen.<\/li><li><strong>John scolds<\/strong> his &#8220;stubborn&#8221; and &#8220;immature&#8221; direct report, while Susan accuses John of &#8220;controlling&#8221; and &#8220;unsupportive&#8221; behaviour.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The ability to prevent and class=\"arrow-wrapper\"><div class=\"arrow-list\"><ul><li><strong>Define<\/strong> a larger cause.<\/li><li><strong>Articulate<\/strong> the problem better than anyone else.<\/li><li><strong>Build<\/strong> a team capable of attacking the status quo.<\/li><li><strong>Hold<\/strong> the team accountable.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>When the company hits obstacles, leaders are responsible for driving change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Changing economic environments, like <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.aicd.com.au\/economic-news\/world\/outlook\/australias-per-capita-recession-as-rba-extends-rate-pause.html\">Australia&#8217;s slip into a per-capita recession<\/a> combined with a high-interest-rate environment prompt business leaders to focus on business fundamentals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"indent-wrapper\"><div class=\"indented-text\"><span>This is the bread and butter of department heads, executives and C-suite leaders.<\/span><\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>However, throughout your career, you may take on informal leadership positions because you see an opportunity for
